Campground Booking Tips

Increase your odds in reserving a campsite

1. Did you try the official Ontario Parks Reservation system?

Competition can be fierce for favourite campsites at popular parks, especially in July and August.  For Ontario Parks, you can book your campsite five months in advance of your arrival date.

  1. Plan early and have your preferred park and dates ready prior to the booking date.
  2. Have a few back-up sites on your list — those parks fill fast.
  3. On the day of, have your preferred campsite loaded with your arrivals before 7 am in case there’s high traffic on the site.
  4. Wait until 7 am and reserve.
  5. Your campsite will be in your cart for 15 minutes, so act fast and pay before your time runs out.
  6. If you did all of the above and still don’t have a campsite, CampScann may be able to help you.

2. Lead Time Helps!

You increase your chances of getting a campsite opening by having more lead time, which in turn gives you more opportunities. We advise our customers to try booking well in advance when the parks open their online reservation system. If that doesn’t work, then CampScann can help you.

3. Choose fewer Nights

You increase your odds by choosing fewer nights.  Most of our successful customers went with one to two nights.  When choosing one night, you will still receive notifications if a three-night or longer cancellation opens up.

4. Flexible Dates

CampScann gives you the opportunity to make your dates flexible for free which increases your chances of receiving a notification for an opening.  It adds two days prior to your arrival date and two days at the end.

For example, Martha would like to go camping for three nights in August from a Sunday to the following Saturday.  She will choose her arrival date as the Tuesday for three nights.  CampScann will monitor her preferred park from Sunday (2 days prior to her arrival) to Saturday (2 days after the selected date).

CampScann can send her a notification of a three-night opening for the below days:
  • Sunday to Wednesday
  • Monday to Thursday
  • Tuesday to Friday
  • Wednesday to Saturday

5. Go For Mid-weekdays or Lesser-known Parks

Weekends are popular and the first dates to get booked, especially at the most popular parks.  Try setting up a couple of scans for midweek arrival dates.  Your chances of receiving a campsite notification may increase.

We know that many people have preferred parks they like to camp at every year, even the same campsite.  There are lesser-known parks that are just as scenic.  Check them out at the below link.

6. Pick The Right Plan For You

We have crafted four plans which all run at five minute scanning frequencies until your arrival date to notify you if there’s an opening.

Have a back-up plan.  Pick a second park to increase your chances or a second date.  You can increase your chances by selecting our Quad plan which gives you four times the scans.

7. Act Fast

Campsite cancellations get scooped up fast.  When you receive a notification from CampScann,  we advise that you act fast and book within minutes.  If you were unsuccessful at booking that site, you can wait to see if more campsite openings come up as we continue to run your scan until the arrival date.

8. Try Roofed Accommodations

Whether you’re new to camping and don’t want to invest in camping equipment, want to enjoy nature without lugging all your camp gear or sleep in a tent, or prefer the warmth of a rustic cabin in the winter, then roofed accommodations maybe be perfect for you.  Not only is it a great experience, but it’s also a steal compared to other cottage rentals in Ontario.

CampScann offers Roofed Accommodations as a selection under Site Type.  See all of Ontario Parks Roofed Accommodations listed below.

  1. Backcountry Cabins
  2. Camp Cabins

  4. Lodges
